SHA-KEE, THE GOLDEN CAT

In a far away land, there once lived a mighty Emperor whose face all were forbidden to look upon without his permission. He sat on a big red and gold throne on a platform a little above his people. His servants waited on him with their eyes on the floor. They could only see the tips of his red shoes, decorated in gold embroidery and jewels. If they looked him in the face, they would be executed for the Emperor was like a god and it was believed his face shone like the Sun. He could do no wrong and was always right. His people were very afraid of him.
Now, in this great land lived a Cat who was afraid of no one. He was a very big cat with long golden hair – each hair was seven inches long and thick as a copper wire – and he had gold whiskers. He, too, lived in the palace and, like the Emperor, he was the greatest in all the land – that is, the greatest among cats! The people enjoyed seeing him sit in the big windows, sunning himself, licking his golden paws, or playing with a big ivory ball made from an elephant’s tusk, polished to a shine. The Great Cat’s name was Sha-Kee. Oh, he was a sight to see, was Sha-Kee! But even Sha-Kee, with his slanty eyes like green emeralds, would not look upon the Emperor face.
One day Sha-Kee heard all the cats talking about him and the Emperor. They turned to him and said, “Sha-Kee, are you afraid of the Emperor?” They blinked with tears in their eyes, because Sha-Kee glittered like the Sun in the sky! They looked away while they waited for his answer...

I won the contest "Premio Il Battello a Vapore" (Piemme Ed.). These are my illustrations...

Sono arrivato primo al contest per illustratori edito da Piemme Edizioni / Il Battello a Vapore! Sono davvero contento, ho passato una bellissima mattinata a Milano presso la Feltrinelli in piazza Piemonte inoltre ho avuto modo di conoscere tanti bravissimi illustratori e scrittori! In basso pubblico qualche foto di me sul palco al momento della premiazione (peccato non si veda come mi tremavano le gambe! ^_^)
Le motivazioni della vittoria, se non vado errato, sarebbero: "composizione bilanciata e l’uso del colore della copertina, e per l’interpretazione drammatica delle illustrazioni interne".
Dimenticavo! La firma è stata aggiunta adesso, le opere sono state tutte valutate con pseudonimi, la giuria non ha saputo i nomi dei disegnatori e degli scrittori fino al momento stesso della premiazione.
Tantissimi complimenti anche a Carla Ciccoli, vincitrice per quanto riguarda la categoria autori!

Hi guys, I love "The Road", a book of Cormack McCarhty. For fun I decided to make an alternative cover for the book. For this sketch I use only Photoshop. There's not an accurate choice about this. I love corel Painter, but I need more practice with Photoshop.

"The Road" in italiano pubblicato con il titolo "La Strada" è un libro di Cormac McCarthy che amo molto e per divertimento ho deciso di disegnare una copertina alternativa. E' tutta realizzata completamente in Photoshop, caso per me più unico che raro, normalmente lo uso abbinato a Painter, ma cercare di allenarmi a utilizzare solo Photoshop per padroneggiarlo di più' è comunque cosa assai gradita.
Che dire, spero aver incuriosito qualcuno a leggere il libro!

Queste illustrazioni sono state create per la rivista Nu®ant. Mi è stato richiesto di trattare come argomento gli sport da combattimento e, siccome la lotta libera mi ha sempre divertito, per me è stato naturale dedicarmici con queste illustrazioni. Saranno pubblicate a ottobre in contemporanea con una mostra dedicata, comunque ne riparlerò ancora.

Di seguito un piccolo filmato di un mio sketch colorato con Corel Painter 12, le matite invece le ho realizzate in Photoshop (per comodità ho il mio pennello personalizzato in Photoshop).
Here is a short movie about my sketch colored with Corel Painter 12
Da quando ho smesso di usare gli acrilici e sono passato al digitale, Corel Painter è stata la mia prima scelta. Lo uso dalla vesrione 8, quindi nel mio piccolo posso dire di avere abbastanza esperienza. Non posso quindi che essere contento che Corel abbia deciso di pubblicare una nuova major release del programma per la pittura digitale.
Per quel che mi riguarda è da Painter IX.5 che il programma ha bisogno di quel tocco in piu' per competere con un Photoshop sempre piu' agguerrito per quel che riguarda la pittura digitale. Vediamo quindi se con Painter 12 qualcosa si è mosso nella direzione giusta.

Since I stopped using acrylics and switched to digital, Corel Painter was my first choice. I started to use Painter since version 8 and I can say to have enough experience. So I'm very happy to try the brand new Corel Painter
